About NBPOL And PNG's Certified Sustainable Palm Oil

NBPOL Produces Certified Sustainable Palm Oil

Increasing yields while minimising environmental harm is one of the greatest challenges facing agriculture and will require the use of a more tailored, knowledge-intensive system.

When it comes to sustainability, New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL) is no new player in the field. With its major operations situated in West New Britain, Papua New Guinea, NBPOL is a large scale integrated, industrial producer of sustainable palm oil in Australasia. Since its 2011 sustainability report, NBPOL continued to develop and implement sustainable practices as a world leader in RSPO certification scheme.

Unlike other world palm oil producers, NBPOL's sustainable growth reflects the parallelism within its overall strategy - acquiring and upgrading its plantation landbank (including productivity increases) and championing verticle integration of its supply chain.

Sustainable Growth Through Acquisition

Within the last five years, NBPOL acquired several plantations in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Apart from its birth place in West New Britain, other operations are:

1) Ramu Agricultural Industries Ltd (RAIL), Papua New Guinea.
Acquired in 2008; RSPO Certified since 2010.

2) Guadalcanal Plains Palm Oil Ltd (GPPOL), Solomon Islands.
Acquired in 2005; RSPO Certified since 2005.

3) Higaturu Oil Palm (HOP), Papua New Guinea.
Acquired in 2010; RSPO Certified since 2012

4) Poliamba (POL), Papua New Guinea.
Acquired in 2010; RSPO Certified since 2012.

5) Milne Bay Estates (MBE), Papua New Guinea.
Acquired in 2010; RSPO Certified since 2012.

Sustainable Growth Through Productivity

At the heart of NBPOL's strategy for organic growth is "Vision 30:30". The objective is to increase fruit yields to 30 tonnes per hectare and achieve 30% combined crude palm fruit oil and palm kernel oil extraction rates per tonne of fruit.

Sustainable Growth Through Vertical Integration

Getting closer to the market and end-users underpins NBPOL's position in the industry and strengthens its prime focus now and into the future. The model is important not only for the company but PNG's palm oil industry as well because consumers must have assurance over the integrity of their ingredients.

Segregated Palm Oil

To further guarantee assurance, the company has succesfully commissioned its refinery in the U.K in 2010 as a step forward in providing the European market with only segregated, certified sustainable and traceable oil.

Traceability In Germany

The success of New Britain Oils has demonstrated to the market that there is strong demand for segregation, and the company is expanding the segregation model to Germany via a partnership with Wilmar International. Thus, Wilmar's refinery in Brake, Germany will be supplying continental Europe with fully traceable and segregated sustainable palm oil from NBPOL's certified plantations in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.

Furthering More Into Vertical Integration

To further promote traceable, sustainable palm oil, a fractionation plant was completed in West New Britain in 2011, dedicated to supply super-olein and palm-mid-fraction to Ferrero Rocher. Ferrero Rocher is one of the world's largest confectionary manufacturers. From Papua New Guinea, Ferrero Rocher intends to supply highly specialised palm oil for export to Italy and the U.K.

Since 2005, New Britain Palm Oil Ltd has been on a growth trajectory, combining a strong focus on productivity increases with acquisitions and improvements of plantations in the Pacific. With the demand for segregated, certified sustainable and traceable oil, NBPOL has grown its business vertically, getting closer to the market and providing assurance to the end-users.
